Bridging the Gap with Song
On the last Friday of every month, our church participates in a wonderful ‘Prayer Service’ for the elderly at Bedingfield Aged Care facility in Pinjarra. Last Friday saw our very talented St Joseph’s Primary School choir heading down to Bedingfield to meet and greet the residents and share in some uplifting cultural music and songs of Prayer.
The St Joseph’s school choir, led by Mrs Nila Poasa on guitar, sang three songs, including an Indigenous and a New Zealand number which proved wonderfully popular with the elderly residents. The third song was also learnt especially by the choir for the day, a song about how language can bring us closer together. Afterward the residents shared time with Parish Priest Fr Gayan and St Augustine’s parishioners on the day, mingling and chatting with the children.
The visit served to not only welcome God into our hearts through music and song, but to bridge the gap between young and old, especially the elderly confined to Aged Care. Mrs Poasa’s choice of songs for her choir reflect the importance in bridging cultural divide in communities too, and it is heartening to know our children are learning to expand their cultural awareness and empathy by connecting with the community. It was a beautiful group initiative on behalf of St Augustines and the St Joseph’s Primary School, we look forward to seeing the choir visit again soon.
